African-Brazilian History Rio Tour

Rediscover the origins of the Brazilian people, based on their African roots. In addition to devoting her life to researching and sharing the untold tales of African Origins in Brazil, your local guide is integrally involved in local African Rio movements. Together you will explore the deep history of one of Rio’s first neighborhoods through its colonial 17th-century architecture juxtaposed to local favelas and modern-day skyscrapers. You will visit: a recently unearthed mass-cemetery of former slaves, Praça Mauá/the world-renowned Kobra mural paying homage to the world’s minorities, the former slave market, the archaeological site of Cais do Valongo, Pedra do Sal, and the IPN (Instituto dos Pretos Novos).
